Tajikistan: outbreak of CCPP from illegal import

//05 Nov 2009
The Veterinary Union of Tajikistan reported an outbreak of Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP) in 400 goats. All goats were destroyed.

The outbreak occurred in the district of Republic Subordination, formerly known as Karotegin Province. Suspected source of the outbreak is illegal import of goats from a neighbouring country. This is the first occurrence of CCPP in Tajikistan.

Diagnosis
Diagnostic tests were confirmed at the OIE Reference Laboratory for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia, CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development).

CCPP is caused by Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae. Definitive diagnosis can be difficult. The causative agent is one of the most fastidious mycoplasmas and can be missed during routine bacteriological analysis. It is also closely related to several other species of Mycoplasma, which complicates identification and serological screening.

CCPP
Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia is one of the most severe diseases of goats. This disease, which affects the respiratory tract, is extremely contagious and frequently fatal In naive flocks, the morbidity rate may reach 100% and the mortality rate can be as high as 80%. CCPP causes major economic losses in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, where it is endemic.
