Controlling foot and mouth disease: which strategy works best?

//25 Jan 2010
To control an ensuing epidemic such as foot and mouth disease (FMD) as quickly as possible, emergency vaccination is preferred in the Netherlands to pre-emptive culling. However, is this more effective? Dutch researchers therefore evaluated different control strategies regarding the control of this important disease.

Several questions were posed in the study such as: What is the optimal control strategy in case of an outbreak of FMD from an epidemiological and economic perspective and what is the distribution of costs between animal species and cost types?

Results
The project group took the differences between animal species and farm sectors into account and showed that a quick and large-scale vaccination within a radius of at least 2km is as effective as pre-emptive 1-km ring culling to mitigate FMD epidemics. The researchers also address that control measures should primarily target cattle farms.
