BSE found in Denmark

//24 Nov 2009
The Danish ag authorities reported a case of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) on a farm with 116 cows in Ærøskøbing. The infection was sub-clinical but was tested positive by the National Veterinary Institute.

BSE was not detected in Denmark since September 2005. The affected cow was born before the tightening of the feed ban in 1997 and 2001.

  • On 1 January 2001, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration introduced a total ban on feeding processed animal protein (including meat and bone meal (MBM), fish meal, etc.) to animals that are kept, fattened or bred for the production of food.
  • In 1997, feeding mammalian MBM to ruminants was prohibited.
  • In 1990, feeding ruminant MBM to ruminants was prohibited.

Measures consist of quarantine and modified stamping out.
